The points based skilled immigration category the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme, introduced in January 2002 with the latest changes on 07 November 2006, has proved to be very successful. However, it is set to be completely replaced in summer of 2008 by Tier 1 for General Highly Skilled Migrants, part of the UK's new five-tier points based system. From 1 May 2004 nationals of the new EU Countries have been able to work freely in the UK subject only to the requirement in most cases that they apply under the Worker Registration Scheme.
