You will find some common examples below of situations where people may meet the points requirement. In general, you will need to fall under one of the following combinations of qualifications, UK experience, and past earning record to qualify under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme. If you graduated from one of the 50 eligible MBA programmes since 2 December 2004, you likely qualify for the HSMP under the MBA provision.

Since the earning power of individuals varies between countries, they are divided into five categories - A, B, C, D and E. Category A includes Countries such as the US, EU member states, etc., while category E covers developing countries such as Afghanistan and Nigeria.

If you can come under any of the examples below, you may very well be able to come under the highly skilled migrant programme:

If you live in a 'Category A' country such as the USA, Australia, Canada, Kuwait, Japan, Hong Kong, UAE, etc:

Example 1 (27 years of age or younger)
27 years of age: 20
Bachelors degree: 30
UK Degree or UK Work Experience 0
Earning power - More than £26,000: 25


TOTAL: 75
Example 2 (32 years of age and over)
Points for age: 0
Bachelor's degree: 30
UK Degree or UK Work Experience 5
Earning power - More than £35,000: 40


TOTAL: 75


Please note that these cases would not qualify if they could not provide evidence of the above earning power during the previous year.

If you live in a 'Category B' country such as most Eastern European countries, New Zealand, Venezuela, Uruguay, etc:

Example 1 (28 or 29 years of age)
Points for age: 10
Bachelor's degree: 30
UK Degree or UK Work Experience 0
Earning power - More than £14,000: 35


TOTAL: 75
Example 2 (32 years of age and over)
Points for age: 0
Master's degree: 35
UK Degree or UK Work Experience 5
Earning power - More than £15,313: 40


TOTAL: 80


If the person in example one had a Masters degree and had experience in the UK he/she would be able to gain entry with a lower previous salary.

If you live in a 'Category C' country such as Brazil, Morocco, Philippines, Romania, Russia, etc:

Example 1 (27 year of age or younger)
Points for age: 20
Master's degree: 35
UK Qualification or UK Experience 0
Earning power - More than £7,200: 20


TOTAL: 75
Example 2 (32 years of age and over)
Points for age: 0
Bachelor's degree: 30
UK Qualification or UK Experience 5
Earning power - More than £11,000: 40


TOTAL: 75


If you live in a 'Category D' country such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam, Ukraine, etc:

Example 1 (28 or 29 years of age)
Points for age: 10
Bachelor's degree: 30
UK Qualification or UK Experience 0
Earning power - More than £6,000 35


TOTAL: 75
Example 2 (32 years of age or over)
Points for age: 0
Masters Degree 35
UK Qualification or UK Experience 0
Earning power - More than £6,600: 40


TOTAL: 75

The person in Example two is older and so can only gain the necessary points based on having Masters degree and more points under earning power.

If you live in a 'Category E' country such as Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Somalia, etc:

Example 1 (27 years of age or younger)
Points for age: 20
Bachelors Degree 30
UK Qualifications or UK Experience 0
Earning power - More than £2,300: 25


TOTAL: 75
Example 2 (32 years of age and over)
Points for age: 0
Bachelors Degree 30
UK Qualification or UK Experience 0
Earning power - More than £3,500: 45

If you wish to come under the new HSMP system after 7 November 2006 you will need to have a qualification at least at bachelors degree level or equivalent and gain a reasonable number of points under the earning power section. If you are thirty-two years of age or older you will need to do well under qualifications or earning power to gain enough points.
